On the 30th of October 2024, Chancellor Rachel Reeves presented a Budget that brought a welcome increase in public service spending, with boosts to the NHS, education, and local authorities – key areas impacting women’s lives, including their health, economic stability and access to safe housing. At IRISi, we recognise these positive steps; however, we are concerned by the lack of dedicated funding for tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). Without clear financial commitment, it remains uncertain how the government’s ambition to halve VAWG within the next decade can be achieved.
IRISi has long championed the pivotal role of healthcare settings in addressing domestic abuse and sexual violence. The Women’s Health Strategy presents a crucial opportunity to implement initiatives that support this work, yet this Budget earmarked no specific funds for the strategy or its core components. Without targeted investment, many essential VAWG services risk severe underfunding, with some facing a funding cliff edge as early as March 2025.
While IRISi welcomes the overall investment in public services, we urge the government to acknowledge that dedicated VAWG funding – including within the health budget – is essential for meaningful, lasting change. By investing in specialised support within healthcare and across critical services, the government can fulfil its commitments and ensure survivors have the necessary resources to rebuild safe, healthy lives.
